THE NEW Democratic Party, long seen as the voice

of the blue-collar worker, was dealt a blow when

more details of the now-infamous Nanaimo

Commonwealth Holding Society dealings became

public. It is perhaps because of its reputation as the

voice of everyman that people are so disappointed

with the NDP's funneling of charity dollars back into

the party and The Democrat newspaper. Premier

Mike Harcourt has refused to step down, insisting

_ that he dealt with the scandal in the best way possi-

bie. But he has his critics, Former Housing Minister

Joan Smallwood, who publidy questioned his han-

f quiring diing of the affair, was quickly fired by the premier
