Not one actor looks out of place
in an ensemble that works so well
together that it is a shock to realize
during the curtain call just how
much doubling (and even quadru-
pling) of roles there has been.

Robert Moloney’s emotional
transparency allows him to wear
Valentine's heart on his sleeve at all
times while Rick Dobran’s perfidi-
ous Proteus follows what's in his
pants with equal commitment.

Laurel Lemley’s Julia plays
petulance for early laughs and con-
sequently misses some of the com-
plexity she later finds.

All of the cust speak
Shakespeare well —- a tribute to
both Selady and one of Canada's
premier acting schools.

Dean Paul Gibson and Judi
Closkey excel in this regard.

Mara Gottler’s costurnes and
De! Surjik’s lights create more of a
tone for this production than Helen
‘Jarvis’ set, which beautifully

. explores height and texture but at
the expense of place.
_ The reversible screens are fussy
to use and look like an afterthought.

And while I love the idea of the
monied aristocracy being wheeled
through their world by the hoi poloi
like so much Gucci baggage, the -
cheap-looking carts undercut the
concept and would look more at .
home in an abandoned railway sta-
tion than an Italian fashion show.

Gottler’s upper-class costumes
suffer slightly from the same lack
of furids for finish, but her common
servants who speak much of the
play’s truth are a wonderfully play-
ful layering of rags and tatters.

acknowledge that my reservations
about the limiting effects of
Selody’s chosen style came from a
re-reading of the play and that my
experience of the performance was
really enjoyable.

However, my understanding of
Selody’s interpretation came down
to one big dumb-man joke.

How can you tell if. a man is
happy? Who cares!

And that’s not what Shakespeare
intended.
