- MANY MATERIALS can make an attractive and serviceable floor for exterior walkways. Take cues from materials used on your home and the ambience of your outdoor living space. Even if your budget is tight, you -should find plenty of options. Do- it-yourself installation can also hold down costs. Brick carries an unmistakable connotation of permanence and quality. For that reason, it’s a iscene-setter for a formal entry area or an old-world garden. _- Rustic with wood edging, it’s equally at home in relaxed, out- doorsy settings. (Brick can usually be set on a bed of sand with no problem.) Exterior tiles come in several shapes and forms but the most com- mon is unglazed quarry tile, often 6x6” or 8x8” squares. The material comes in an array of earthy reds, browns, grays and greens. In a terra-cotta hue, this material is almost a signature of Southwestern style. Exterior tiles should be set in mortar, or be laid over a concrete slab with latex thin-set. Wooden walkways can light up an informal yard setting with a rus- tic texture. For long life, build a wooden walkway of naturally rot- resistant materials, such as cedar or pressure-treated pine. Concrete pavers are precast ‘products that give you a tremen- dous range of choice in colors and patterns. Pavers come in dozens of shades, ranging from a simple square stepping pad to brick and cobblestone look-alikes. Because they are concrete, these pavers are extremely durable and resistant to damage from freeze- and-thaw cycles. They are typically installed over a base of gravel and sand. Stamped concrete is the faux finish of the walkway world. It is poured concrete that is colored, embossed and sometimes textured to create the feel of traditional paving materials. Trained contractors pour the concrete on-site, then stamp it with moods in patterns reminiscent of brick, slate, cobblestone, tile or other pavers. The quality of the results depends on the skill of the installer, so check out examples of the contractor’s work. Poured-in-place concrete walk- ways give a tough surface. Use tex- turing techniques to create a slip- tesistant surface. For a nubby look, ‘consider an exposed aggregate walk, which shows the texture of gravel in the concrete mix. Trees and other plans absorb carbon dioxide which contributes to the greenhouse effect. Environment Canada’s booklet What We Can Do For Our Environment contains this and many other useful tips. We can help birds by using bird feeders and bird houses and by planting shrubs and trees that provide then with shelter and food. In the winter, avoid using salt to melt the ice on your sidewalks or driveways. In fact, salt can actually weaken the mortar of a brick or stone pathway. Try sand as a substitute. : When using preserved wood for fences or decks, it is better to use the pressure-treated varieties instead of those preserved. with pen- tachloro- -phenol. We don’t recommend that even pressure-treated wood (or old rail- way ties) be used near a vegetable garden because rain or “ground water could cause the chemical preservatives to “leach” out into the soi - Courtesy Beaver Lumber.
