MAILBOX Learn truth about Possee Dear Editor: The writer of the letter in the July 10 North Shore News, who identified herself only as “A North Shore mother,”’ is clearly suffering a lot of pain, bitterness and confusion in reaction to her son’s drug problems. 1 sympathize with her sadness and disappointment, and hope that one day she can be reunited with the son she once cherished. However, I believe that in the interest of justice, on behalf of the police and the public, this “North Shore mother’? would do well to calm down and to get her facts straight about the Danny Possee case. Whilst the tone of her letter suggests that she approves of what happened in that case, it is evident ” that the few facts that are known at this time are unclear to her. The writer asks, ‘What was Danny Possee doing at a house that had illegal drugs and why would he be using a BB gun in- doors, especially in somebody else’s home?’’ : : First of all, Danny was in the privacy of his own home, harmlessly target practising, which to my knowledge is not an ‘egal activity, and is, in fact, a hobby many respectable citizens enjoy. Secondly, how can anyone imagine that Danny deserved to die because someone else in his house was in possession of 15 grams of marijuana? If her son Bridging the two solitudes Dear Editor: Thank you ‘o contributing writer Paul Hughes for his articles on First Nations People ~~~ “Native Affairs,"’ and thank you to you for pubitshing them. They are very interesting and informative and address wu real need for bridging the two soli- tudes. Ann Ferries West Vancouver was a drug user, chances are that this North Shore mother has also been in a house where ‘illegal drugs’’ were present. Those of us who support the Possee family in their efforts to uncover what exactiy led up to this police investigation, and what transpired on the night of Danny’s death, are not interested in con- demning the police or in diminishing the good work that they do. In addition, the public needs to know that a large percentage of the funds in the Danny Possee Memorial Fund has already been allocated for a scholarship in ei- ther criminology or health care, which were two areas that were of special interest to Danny. My husband and I have shared a long and close friendship with the Possce family. Sally and Derek are generous and caring people, honest in their dealings with others, and whatever the cir- cumstances, have always made the most of life. Over the years, we’ve seen these same qualities manifest themselves in all three of their children: Danny, Kelly and James. Danny was an involved young man rather than a_ passive observer. He was a peacemaker, someone who could always make us laugh, and someone who was always there to lend a hand. We miss him very much, and we hope that a full and unbiased investiga- tion will help to prevent further unnecessary shootings. Juliana C. Roe North Vancouver Singing isn’t enough Dear Editor: Taleeb Noormohamed's July 3 Zap! column in the News was quite contradictory in nature for if he really does “respect Collins for speaking his mind” and believes that ‘the has not much to say’’ why did he then go on to write a whole column chastizing Doug’s ongoing col- umn of attack on minorities, especially racial minorities be- ing a nuisance to his ‘‘white’’ Canada? Perhaps Noormohamed (a minority himself) was at firs: kindly looking at it from the overall Canadian standpoint putting himself in the shoes of the majority of Canadians, realizing, yes, Doug (and others) have a poim — their culture and society is being somewhat imposed upon by Canada’s identity undergoing a transition. Noormohamed then came around to reality to real- ize he and his family, too, want a piece of the big Cana- dian pie and he wasn't going to fet the selfish Collinses of Support the Right to Life Sponsored by N.S. ProLife For information on biomedical and ethical issues like abortion and euthanasia call the Resource Centre at 984-9094 Canada get in his way. Noormohamed says ‘‘Collins believes the only true Canadian is white.” That, of course, de- pends from which standpoint you look at it. But, considering national symbols such as the Union Jack on B.C.’s flag and the Queen on our currency, and considering that we still continue officially to use the languages the British and French gave us (we still even engage their systems of gov- ernment both federally and provincially), to lose this iden- tity and heritage would be dis- honorable to our forefathers. Whether these national sym- bols and traditions continue to reflect the type of culture chat instigated them depends upon the patriotism Canadians wish to reveal to Ottawa, and just singing ‘“‘O Canada"’ and “God Save the Queen” at special events isn't enough rev- erence.
