16 - Friday, June 21, 1991 - North Shore News HOME & GARDEN Vancouver Rose Society holding annual exhibit THE 42ND annual rose show of the Vancouver Rose Society (VRS) will be held June 22 and 23 at John Oliver School, 41st and Fraser in Vancouver. The society is the largest of its kind in Canada. It held its first show in 1949. At that show there were 26 classes and a few dozen roses. This year has over 120 classes for roses as well as classes for Moral art. Although there was less sun- shine in May than in any other year since 1932, there will still be wonderful roses on display to admire and sniff. This is an opportunity to see very rare and unusual roses not often seen, including some of the oldest in cultivation, including the Mad Gallicas (so called because of their eccentric coloring). Modern hybrid tea and floribunda roses will share the scene with tiny miniature roses. Roses suitable for the landscape and non-formal gardens will also be on display. Members of the VRS will be on hand to answer questions and help with problems folks may be having with their roses this year. With the growing concern about the overuse of chemicals and fer- tilizers, members also advise on integrated pest management. Har- dy shrub roses are now available that are generally happier without chemical spraying. The VRS designated rose for 1991 is the beautiful ivory-yellow hybrid tea ‘*Peaudouce,’’ also known as Elina. Times for the show are Satur- day, June 22, 2 to 6 p.m., and Sunday, June 23, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $2 or advance tickets at $1.50 can be obtained from society members. Children 12 years and under accompanied by an adult will be admitted free of charge. Competition is not restricted to members of the society. Anyone wishing to enter blooms can ob- tain a program ty phoning the following contact names: Mr. Doug Hosgood 434-9871, Ms. Maggie Hosgood (evenings) 738- 6150, or Mr. Dennis Yeomans 266-7839 (for old garden rose in- fa).
