8 - Friday, November 23. 1990 ~ North Shore News MAILBOX WV parents’ group lambasted Dear Editor: For the past few months, readers have been treated to the one-sided rhetoric of a small group of parents in West Van- couver (Parents’ Action Commit- tee on Dual Entry) bent on fore- ing our duly elected school board to break the law. Nowhere in the oft-times in- flammatory, slanderous, and near-libelous -cbiage have they shown that they understoced or, indeed, cared that to enrol their under-age and unfunded youngsters would have a financial impact on all fegally registered students in our district. As a parent, I would resent cuts to programs or services to our current students merely to assuage the hysteria of parents who do not seem to have confidence in their offspring’s ability to learn and mature without their playmates in tow. Parents’ effort misdirected Dear Editor: If the West Vancouver parents aligned with PACODE (Parents’ Action Committee on Dual Entry) wish to counsel school boards to defy the School Act, I would sug- gest that they find as motivation a far more significant issue than dual entry into kindergarten. I would suggest that the impact of dual entry pales beside some of the more educationally significant issues and changes that our West Van School Board has had to wrestle with over the past few years. 1 would suggest that these parents, whose zealous anxiety for their preschoolers is admirable, must redirect their activism to more pressing concerns of the moment in education, such as Curriculum 2000, the demands on our facilities for the future and the threat of fiaanctal restraint on education. And { would suggest it some- what reckless to expect our Trust- ees to break the law, risk penalty to the district and rob district education funds in order to sub- sidize illegal early entry into kindergarten for a few restless four-year-olds. As the board agrees, any lobbying to change offensive legislation should be aimed at the provincial govern- ment. If the apparent plan of these individuals is to usurp the present open and education-oriented school board in West Vancouver, they should find a real issue for which to seck support. M.E. Baker West Vancouver Return crossing! Open letter to Hon. Rita Johnson, Minister of Highways: The planners who have brought the Lonsdale overpass (o near completion have removed the pe- destrian and cyclist crossing at St. Andrews and Upper Levels high- way. Not only has the Ministry of Highways facilitated more vehicular traffic, by the same token they have discouraged en- vironmentally-friendly pedestrian and bicycle traffic. On behalf of all those cut off from crossing the Upper Levels highway between Lynn Valley turn-off and Lonsdale Avenue. 1 demand the return of this cross- ing. Janice Harris North Vancouver As a taxpayer, § would oppose any increase in tixes to cover the shortfall in the budget caused by admitting unauthorized students. And as a taxpayer, [ resent the time and effort our board has been forced to spend on this single issue. Young children have a marvellous ability to ‘take things in their stride." Any new beginn- irg is exciting no matter at what time in the calendar year. Of con- cern should be the possible harm done to these four-year-olds by the anger and furor they must surely sense around them. hk would be a great pity if their en- thusiasm for school and knowl- | ONLY ONE STORE HAS BRANDNAME VALUES AND CLUB Z POINTS! edge was forever marred by the actions of parents who “did not vet their way.” Trustees are clected to imple- ment the programs and. services set by the Ministry of Education. They are entrusted to maintain the education system in a responsible, fiscally balanced way. They are entrusted to do so while adhering to the law of the land. The electorate would make 2 grievous error in electing anyone whose only purpose in standing for office is to contravene the law in order to settle his own personal issue.
