Ll Local author uncovers a Canadian legend HE WAS called an agitator and a ‘*God damned son-of- a-bitch,’’ but Ginger Goodwin was a B.C. to be told. And if Deep Cove author Susan Mayse has her way Goodwin will soon join the ranks of other well-known scoundrels and fron- tiersmen such as Billy the kid and Davy Crockett. Her new book Ginger, The Life and Death of Albert Goodwin, is . an extensively researched chronicle of Goodwin's life as a labor ac- tivitist. in the early 1900s. Good- win worked tirelessly to improve the conditions for workers slaving in the hellish mines on Vancouver Island, specifically in Cumberland. The book was a labor of love for writer and editor Mayse, whose background is actually in medieval history and fiterature. 11 started out as research on general coal mine history but, says Mayse, Goodwin's story ‘“‘kept coming back to haunt me. I felt: under some compulsion to write it.” According to Mayse, Goodwin was a politically significam figure for several groups, including so- cialists, pacifists and the trade union movement, To this day the events surroun- ding his death are shrouded in mystery. By offical claims he was shot by a special police constable while at- tempting to escape the draft. By vnofficial claims he was an “undesirable,” a communist, a reactionary.
