Brome WORLD offers sensory gratification; medieval

quartet swings with jazz drumming giant.

You can’t say she’s been prolific.

Six studio albums over an 11-year
span make for the coming of a
new release an event of no smail
importance to the Bushed,

Meticulous self-absorption has
turned the singer-songwriter into
one of a handful of honestly origi-
nal voices heard on the contem-
porary music scene. The evolution
from 1978's debut The Kick inside
to The Sensual World can be
measured in terms cf an increas-
ingly sophisticated expression.

As always, the grand voice flits
from the guttural to the delicately
whispered with an elemental ease.
The music here is not as readily
accessible as its commercially-
successful predecessor Hounds Of
Love. But repeated listening
reveals a lot more subtle stuff go-
ing on here. Cello, Celtic harp,
Uillean pipe and bouzouki join
guitar, bass and drum for densely
dreamy waves of sound. Bonus
points are in order for having the
imagination to include the haun-
ting voices of The Trio Bu'garka as
counterpoint to Bush’s vocal
gymnastics.

Termed by Bush her ‘‘most
personal and female album so
far,” The Sensua! World opens
new windows to the iuxuriant in-
ner world of one of pop’s most ar-
ticulate innovators.

World beat marriages can make
for strange bedfellows, failed ex-
periments and cross-cultural
blasphemies. In this case, the col-
laboration of Norwegian singer
Buen Garnas and sax man Gar-
barek works very well if: (a) You
are a diligent collector of all matter
medieval and Norwegian; (b) You
are a sonic adventurer who
recognizes no musical bounds.

might be drawn in by the
audaciousness pressing upon the
eardrums. Or you could be left
nonplused. Try as you may, you
can’t meaningfully connect with
medieval ballads collected from
the Telemark and Aust Agder
valleys of Norway.

Garbarek’s laconic, In-
dian-inspired framework for these
ancient Nordic farming fables is

ultimately New-Age soothing. It's
by no means all sleepy-time
though. Sporadic dissonant ten-
sion, sparked by combining the
emotional tone of raga with Buen
Garnas’ clarion ‘‘calling’’ vocals
sustains some interest.

The living jazz legend drum rolls
his way into town Nov. 14 as part
of the Time Flies series produced
by the Coastal Jazz and Blues
Society and the New Orchestra
Workshop Society.

Although Roach has pounded
skin for the likes of Charles
Mingus, Charlie Parker, Miles
Davis, Thelonious Monk, Archie
Shepp and Anthony Braxton, he
hasn't been coasting along on past
accolades.

Next week's visit to the Van-
couver East Cultural Centre (VECC)
will see the musical configuration
recorded on this import release.
The Max Roach Double Quartet
featuring the Uptown String
Quartet proves unequivocally that
strings can be blue and can swing
with the right arrangements.

The string quartet is given equa!
play within the ensemble and
tosses riffs as an improvisational
unit. The musicians are not there
simply for background fill. Once
the mind shifts beyond the notion
that string quartets are meant to
play only the classical composers,
the experiment makes sense and
pushes jazz expression into
enriching and uncharted territory.
