“In the beginning nine out of
10 bowls would split.” laments
Elford. “AE I could do is watch
the cracks spring up and turn the
piece into firewood.”

Today a wiser Elford knows how
to avoid such mishaps. To slow
the drying process down he uses
wax; when he’s in a hurry he pops
the piece into a microwave oven.

After working almost daily with
wood Elford says he can spot good
potential bowl material simply by
looking at a tree. But that doesn’t
mean he axes down every good
looking tree he sees. In fact, Elford
has never cut down a tree to make
a bowl. “And I never will,’ he
insists. “All the ones I’ve worked
with have been taken down
because they’re old or diseased. !

down. Trees should stand.”’

His work fetches a fairly hand-
some sum — starting at $40 and
going as high as $400 and more,
depending on the size. And with
access to over 100 kinds of wood,
Elford plans to continue ex-
perimenting with new designs.

Whether he likes it or not, his
hew profession just might end up
choosing him.
