George, grandson of the late Chief Dan George, had 52 goals ana 63 assists for a total of 115 points. with the Chilliwack Eagles this year. In the upcoming hockey season the Eagles will be trading in Chilliwack for Ladner as a base and renaming the team the Ladner Penguins. George wiil be playing with the Penguins. He iz hoping to get 2 scholarship to 2 university in the U.S. to pursue a degree in business and his career in hockey. His father, Len, says Denver University and the University of Chicsgo +vili be watching his progress closely this year. Cyclists place in Tour de France TWO NORTH Vancouver women finished in the top 30 cyclists in the Tour de France Sunday. Judy Latoski was 26th overall, 22:34 behind winner Jeannie Longo of France. Allison Sydor finished 27th overall, 41:11 back from Longo. Drive and dive event scheduled CALLING ALL divers and drivers. This Saturday will be the first of what is hoped to become an annual event: the Drive and Dive ’89. . The “Drive’’ is a car rally which starts at Suaset Beach where ‘ entrants will be presented with a list of rally clues and checkpoints. . Once the “Dive’’ site is found, there will be a diver treasure iheaut. - : But if you can’t dive, don’t worry. Organizer Bob Martin. of Mako Sport Divers says people can just participate in the car rally. If you can’t find a watery treasure you could win a prize for the best and worst dressed team, the best and worst navigator, or the oldest team. . The prizes include “arbor cruises, diving charters and equipment, jet ski rentals, watct:es and more. For $15 the entrants receive a ¢-shirt and proceeds go to the Variety Club Children’s Park. Lawn bowlers take medals THE WEST Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club netted two medals at the B.C. Summer Games last weekend. . Ro» Cleveland wen a bronze medal in the singles event. West Vancouver aiso won a silver in the fours with a team made up of Dave Fairweather, Bill Crane, Brian Arnold-Jenkins and i Wally Moult. “This is the best we’ve ever done,’’ Arnold-Jenkins said about the club’s performance at the Summer Games. Scholarship awards rise THE UNIVERSITY Sports Award Program has received a $300,000 increase in funding, bringing total funding for the pro- gram to $900,000, Stan Hageu, Minister of Advanced Education and Job Trainiag anncunced last week. . This increase will aiiow individual scholarship awards to rise from $1,000 to $1,400 for the 1989-90 academic year. “These awards are provided in order to ensure that eligible athletes are not prevented from sttaining their education goals because of financial limitations,’” Hagen said.
