Cyclist reaches Patagonia

FORTY FLAT tires, 10 months
and 17,000 kilometres later, a Jap-
anese cyclist, who one year ago
began a bicycling trip from North
Vancouver to the tip of South
America, is back home in Japan.

Keni Suzuki, 22, a resident of
Chiba, North Vancouver’s Japa-
nese sister city, visited with North
Vancouver City Mayor Jack
Loucks just over a year ago before
beginning his ride to the southern
lip of Patagonia i in Argentina.

recently received a letter from
Suzuki reporting that the cyclist
had reached the southern tip of
South America in February.

Said Suzuki in the letter: “I! had
many troubles, but all of them
were small ones. For example, I
was given a ticket by the police in
{the) U.S.A., because J rode my
bicycle on a freeway. 1 was attack-
ed by a pig while { was camping in
(the) U.S. .... 1 met friendly and
kind people. It was a most
wonderful time in my life.”

Suzuki is a member of the Japa-
nese Adventure Cyclist Club. He
took a year off from his studies as
an education student at Sophia
University in Tokyo to pedal his
way across two continents.
