V7M 2H4 Liquid gold ORTH SHORE residents complain about too much rain, but are confounded by too much sunshine. Water conservation is so foreign to a population that takes perverse revenge on its normally plentiful rainfall by using lavish amounts of the world’s best water, that it is difficult to convince them when the seemingly in- exhaustible must suddenly be conserved. But the current dry spell, in which no appreciable amount of rain has fallen in the Lower Mainland for over 140 days, is becoming a serious situation, not only for fish and forests but for area residents. Lower Mainlanders have been warned by Greater Vancouver Water District officials that another 10 dry days wili necessitate appealing to residents to volun- tarily conserve water wherever they can. But residents, still wandering around in a fresh water never-never land, mindlessly sprinkling lawns «nd washing cars heedless of dwindling supplies, must begin now to conserve a precious but not always plen- tiful resource rather than wait for the official word. it is time for ALL Lower Mainland municipalities, not just a portion of GVRD member municipalities, to permanently adopt such simple water conservation, measures as sprinkling regulations. And time for Lower Mainlanders to stop squandering their liquid gold. Water is one of the North Shore’s and Vancouver’s blessings; it should be treated as such.
