THE HUSBAND of a who went missing from the psychiatric treatment facility at Lions Gate Hospital a week ago is losing hope of ever seeing his wife again. By Michae! Becker News Reporter woman Albert Smith says his wife, Irene Smith, 55, was admitted to the hospital Dec. 10, suffering from chronic depression. “She just walked out and she’s gone. She had been going to a psychiatrist in North Vancouver before that.”’ She hasn’t been seen or heard from since the morning of Dec. “She seemed to be doing real good,’’ Smith said. ‘‘We were out for dinner the night before and she seemed very happy. But ac- cording to people who are telling me things now, mornings were her worst time.”’ Smith said his wife has been battling depression for a number of years. And he added that be- fore she left the hospital she had asked fellow patients for direc- tions to Lonsdale Quay. “A doctor and a nurse went down there (the quay) early Sun- day morning and looked all frene Smith around there,"* Smith said. A nurse, he said, had planned to go for a walk with his wife that morning. “I'm very worried. i'm worried that she’s in the inlet,’’ Smith said, The missing Port Coquitlam woman is described as being 5’ 6’’, 140 tbs., with grey-green eyes, and short light brown hair. At the time she left the hospital Smith believes she was wearing jeans, a green sweater and a grey winter overcoat. Housing project application withdrawn ENTRE NOUS Femmes have withdrawn their application for a variance permit on their Rufus Drive social housing project, city clerk Bruce Hawkshaw told North Vancouver City Council Dec. 10. By Pamela Lang Contributing Writer The scheduled Dec. 17 public meeting on the project was subse- quently cancelled. Public response at the Nov. 26 council meeting indicated that area residents planned to speak against the project in general, as Rufus Drive homeowner Gordon Marbry urged council at the meeting to delay the entire pro- ject. The application had asked for five changes to the building envelopes, or the space between the buildings or between the buildings and the street. The request, as explained by project architect Linda Baker, followed the discovery that the site was three feet narrower than originally thought. Two electrical NORTH VANCOUVER CITY COUNCIL closets also had to be relocated because the project's basements were to be eliminated. But a letter to city hall indicated that the livability of the suites could be maintained within the building envelopes allowed in the original rezoning application for the 19-unit subsidized housing de- velopment, which council approv- ed in June. The rezoning approval allowed the development to proceed. The variance permit would have allowed minor changes to the ,duilding’s design, but without it the project will still proceed. Council also approved final adoption of the lease authoriza- tion bylaw that governs a 55-year lease of city land to Entre Nous Femmes for the non-profit hous- ing development. The bylaw was |: adopted in a 4-3 vote - with ‘Aldermen Barbara Perrault, Stella Jo Dean, and Rod Clark opposed.
