Churchill captures road run

Second annual quarter marathon

A RECORD 525 entrants studied the heels of
Freeman Churchill as the eventual winner of the
North Shore Quarter-Marathon Road Run and
runner-up Graeme Bowbrick sped away from the
majority of the pack early during the second annual

race Sunday morning.

Churchill, from Halifax,
Nova Scotia, finished in 34
minutes and 00.1 seconds
under overcast skies and
pleasantly warm weather that

runners had completed the
6.52 miles (10.55 kilometers)
course that began at Park
Royal and _ encircled the

Bowbrick, a grade 12 stu-
dent at Handsworth, clocked
34:59.3 and Paul Rapp, also
of North Vancouver, has

Geri Fitch of North Van-
couver was the first woman

in an impressive 36:18.5,
some 32 minutes better than
the top female time of last
year which was recorded by
Lorna Smith of Vancouver.

Lorna placed second in
open women this time (21st
overall) in 39:57.5.

A shorter run of 2.3 miles
(3.6 kilometers) was provided
for elementary school
