Wednesday. July 10. 1991 - North Shore News - 23 Folk fest covers the world beat S YOU read this. World Beat Ctopians are transtor ming a Vancouver patch of green, where sea meets sky ata place called fericho, to set the stave tor the 14th Annual Vancouver Folk Music Festival. This year’s incarnation ot the musical mecca, July 19, 20, 27 at lencho Beach Park, promises to deliver a lot — more than 200 per- farmers drawn from over 20 Coun: Iries are set to bring ahve six dayume stages and three evening concerts, And if past experience holds true, music adventurers will make some rare finds. New tor the first time to the tes tival are groups from Thailand (Booniom Dhammaviset and Tongsuk Minmoha, Caravan) and Crechoslovakia (Iva Bittova with Pavel Fajt, Viadimir Merta and Jablkon). As orchestrated by festival head Gary Cristall the reach and scape of performances planned is im- pressively broad. Where else could one find blues musicians, a ieminist musical comedy trio, a singer of traditional Transylvanian songs. a band that fuses Haitian religious music with carnival songs, an all-woman old timey str- ing band and a native Indian bund sharing the weekend with a host of other acts too numerous to men- tion. Music Now recently caught up with Cristall at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival Main Street office. Music Now: At least one weekend a year people who attend the festival can count on sharing some good feelings, a sense of the way things Racism kept understated From page 24 mirror checks very convincingly. Doris Chillcott as Miss Daisy brought both tenderness and tautness to the role. Because her characterization came from the inside out, she was convincing as an old woman, never reducing the part to decrepit posturing. The later scenes of aging were very touching (my theatre partner stifl- ed a few snuffies) as was the mo- ment when she told Hoke he was her “best friend.” Alvin Sanders brings a humble dignity to Hoke Coleburn without caricaturing and achieves a deli- cate balance between keeping his character’s integrity and showing his good-natured sense of humor. And Allan Gray as Daisy's son Boolie slips in gracefully as the go-between for his mother and Hoke. Under Bill Millerd’s direction the action never reverts to rank sen- timentalism; it achieves a teetotall- ing quaintness with the theme of racial prejudice as understated as a sprig of mint in a pitcher of iced tea. Cristall: “People talk about ita lot. bask people sometimes what they like about the festival and they say, ‘the feel’ Ethink it comes from several things. For one thing the peaple who produce the festival are all, to one degree or another, utopians. Cristal: “No. The big thing we did last year was the environmen- tal program (re-usable plastic ver- sus disposable plates tram festival food outlets) and we're doing that again. Jtworked tar better than we had any right to expect, consider: ing we dida‘t know what we were doing.
