Estranged wi launches suit History of assaults alieged BY SRENT MUDRY Contributing Writer THE wife of a sus- pended North Van- couver RCMP officer claims her husband beat her for two years, starting when she was pregnant in 1993. Steve Melling, 30, was convicted in February of one count of assaulting his estranged wife Lesley Jeffrey. He was also found guilty of threatening. The | threats involved Jeffrey and her brother, both B.C. court sheriffs, Melling was given a condi- tional discharge and one year of probation. In a civil lawsuit, Jetfrey now claims that Melling assaulted her on a number of occasions prior to the inci- dents of a year ago, Jeffrey claims the first assault was in June 1993 when she was preg- nant. “The defendant struck the plaintiff on the arms and body leaving bruises and hand marks clearly visible as: well as kicks in the stomach which left bruising on the right side.” the suit claims, Jeffrey claims the next time her husband beat her was more than a year later in September 1994. This time, at three in the moming, Melling allegedly “kicked and pushed the plaintiff, bunging her head into the night table as well as kicking her and grabbing her by the throat.” Jeffrey claims Melling thes choked her, and. the alleged assault left bruises on her neck, head, upper arms and legs, The suit notes that the day after this second incident, RCMP Cpi. (fara } interviewed Jeffery and made notes of the assault. The investigating officer noted the bruisings and noted the fact that Jeffery chose not to lay a formal police com- plaint. The third alleged assault took piace 10 days later. when Jeffery received bruises on her head, arms and back as well as scrapes on the back of her leg. The — suit Meiling insisted he could not afford to ieave the marriage unless Jeffery paid off his pre- marriage debts. Melling allegedly told her he would leave her alone if she paid off these debts. The final assault, the one for which Melling was charged and convicted, came on May 26, 1995. Jeffery claims that as a result of the 1995 assaults and threats, she has suffered injuries and damages, includ- ing loss of income and oppor- tunity to earn income.
