Stoker met and married Ar- chibald’s daughter Mary, and in 1913 bought Stoker Farm from the captain. When Howard Stoker died in 1938, Mary took on the running of the farina with the help of her son Rupert. She was also active with the North Vancouver Tennis Club, and according to McDonald, her mother was awarded approximate- ly 150 cups. WENDY MCDONALD ... farm life was “‘great.’” The sisters started their elemen- tary years at Lonsdale School, but McDonald said that her mother “decided that we were getting a lit- tle fussy with boys,’’ and sent them to St. Anthony’s College at 26th and Oak, 1% hours away by ferry and streetcar. Mayne attended Grade 1 at Lonsdale, but when it was closed due to the Depression she went to North Van High for Grade 2. Grade 3 was at St. Anthonvy’s, and Mayne likes to boast. that she “‘went from grade school to college. in three years.”* Mayne also spent haif a term under the strict tutelage of Miss Gulland of the Crosby Private School for Ladies, which was located in the building still stan- ding at the northwest corner of Grand Boulevard and Keith Road in North Vancouver. While Mayne graduated from Crofton House in Vancouver, McDonald and Taylor are gradu- ates of North Van High. Today, Dorrie Taylor lives in the Capilano Highlands and is the owner of North Vancouvei’s Capilano Travel, which she found- ed 10 years ago after 25 years in the travel business. Her late hus- band, Dr. Ernie Cleveland, was the first water commissioner of Van- couver, and was involved in the building of the dam which bears his name. McDonald, who lives on Capilano Road, is the owner of B.C. Bearing Engineers, Ltd., which boasts 25 branches across Canada and seven in the U.S. On top of many other honors, McDonald was recently given the Woman of the Year award by the YWCA.
