Inforniation on some of the presentations to date, including the children’s on the Tailed Frog, can be scen on the following website: www. faximum.com/westvan.d/whitby While many wish to alter the proposal or mitigate its impact, that does not mean com- _ plete opposition to the development. Since this is a change to the Official Community Plan it is important for people to know that council has full power to accept, change, or reject what is proposed, and fur- . thermore they can assist councillors in their deliberations by letting them know their views on: @ development such as driveways, backyards, structures up to four feet abore the 1,200-foot level; @ protection of the tailed frog habitat, creek preservation arcas; increased density and traffic congestion @@ water supply; @ compensation to West Vancouver for the seven acres of municipal land within the pro- posed subdivision. Carolanne Reynolds West Vancouver East meets west in box tales Dear Editor: . On a recent trip by automobile from Ambleside to Deep Cove, I drove past both Park Royal in West Vancouver and the new Real Canadian Superstore in the Lynnwood area of North Vancouver, . Each is in the development process and the similarities are startling..." Both _ developments are close to an arterial highway and inlet crossing. Both represent a mutti- million-dollar expansion of a major retail chain. Both are on Indian land at Both serve, to the west and east respectively, a growing area of affluent households whese car-driving shoppers will no doubt cause a major change in traffic volume and patterns as well as have an impact on the businesses already established in the nearby areas. Here the similarities end. It is interesting to compare their response from the local citizenry. From West Vancouver, there is an avalanche of expressions of outrage, over- flow protest meetings in the high school theatre, letters to the local press, tirades from business groups and sabre-rat- ding by council members. In North Vancouver, there does not seem to be even a ripple of opposition to a development which houses its flagship tenant in a structure whose architecture is based on a 1947 Ukrainian tractor fac- tory complete with war sur- plus grey exterior. A random check-up of a few locals estab- lished that they can hardly wait for the opening. Rudyard Kipling stated, “East is east and west is west.” Is it not now time for the nwain to meet?
