Jan. 23 North Shore
Health Board (NSHB)
meeting:

1. A presentation was made

Poster
contest
open to
youth

BLEVATE your
child’s poster art to a
national level.

The federal Ministry of
Canadian Heritage is chal-
lenging young people across
the nation to send in their
drawings of Canada.

One finalist from each
province and territory will

selected from the entries.
The i finalists will be flown
to Ottawa~.with a family
member for the official
Canada Day celebrations.

One image will become
the. official Canada Day
poster, to be displayed coast
to. coast where Canada Day
activities are held.

Students aged 18 or
under are ‘eligible to enter.
Posters should show why
Canada is such an extraordi-
nary place to live.

project proposed for North
Vancouver. The NSHB
agreed to write a ietter to
North Vancouser District
supporting the projeci.

2. The NSHB passed a
motion directing the chief
executive officer to proceed
with actions necessary to
zccomplisa — administrative
efficiencies within the North
Shore Heaith region.

The goal is to increase the
proportion of the regional
budget dedicated to the
delivery of health services
while maintaining the quality
of programs = currently
offered.

3. The NSHB will be estab-
lishing a task group to over-
see the Pediatric building
project at Lions Gate
Hospital.

4. The NSHB has received
information from the
Ministry of Health indicating
that the freeze on capital
building funds has been lift-
ed

Further discussions are
under way to determine the
impact on the Adult Day
Centre building project.

5. Amalgamations:
Discussions with the
Ministry of Health are under
way to amalgamate the West
Vancouver Kiwanis Care
Centre with the North Shore
Health Board. An order in

council is under way to amal-
gamate North Shore Health
with the North Shore Health

6. Funding for new angiog-
rapcy equipment to replace
aging equipment ai Lions
Gate Hospital is one step
closer.

The NSHB received a let-
ter from the — Greater
Vancouver Regional Health
District indicating that a rec-
ommendation will be made
to provide 40% of the total
cost of $1.2 million to $1.5
inillion and that the Ministry
of Health indicated it pians
to fund the 60% balance. The
medical staff —_ publicly
acknowledged the support of
the NSHB and their CEO in
managing the negotiations.

7. Lions Gate Hospital
reported a a very busy holi-
day season, further chal-
lenged by the snow storms
and flu season. As a result of
increased discharges from
long-term care facilities on
the North Shore, patients in
hospital awaiting placement
in long term-care facilities
has dropped from 22 on
Dec. 16 to seven on Jan. 9.

The installation of new
radiology trauma and chest
unit replacement is under
way. The new palliative care
unit opened on Jan. 9.

8. The medical statf reports
that in spite of increased
operating room time being
made available since 1992-
93, waiting lists continue to

grow. Lions Gate Hospital's
waiting list compares favor-
ably with six other peer hos-
pitals and the medical staff
acknowledges that operating
room time is being managed
efficiently.

There is considerable evi-
dence that improved tech-
nology and increased con-
sumer demand for such
things as cataract surgery and
joint replacements is adding
to waiting lists.

The NSHB is gathering
data which will assist in
developing ways to reduce
wait lists.

The medical staff reports
that they are pleased that
anticipated vertical program
cuts were not required to
balance this year’s budget.

They also expressed some
concern over the transfer of
some acute-care _ hospital
beds to accommodate long
term-care patients awaiting
placement in community
facilities (See page | News
Jan. 26) but understood that
this would not result in any
permanent bed closures.

10. The next North Shore
Health Board mecting will
be Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7
p.m. in the North Vancouver
District Hall, 355 Queens.
There will not be a regularly
scheduled meeting on March
13, 1997.
