The Aussies have been trend-setters
with eclectic grape pairings; starting with
Cab/Shiraz, then 1 using Semillon to fike-
wise forgive the sins of cheap chardon-
nay that would peel paint off a shearing
shed on its own.

Tt works here; 80% Semillon adds
“bottom,” a bir of substance and texture
to give depth to a light peachy chardon-
nay that might otherwise leave a rash on
your tonsils. The result is a nice hefty
white that will stand up to any seafood
or starter course and work the aperitif
crowd beforehand.

Lindemans’ sound financial base as a
traditionally. volume-oriented firm,
(quantity. over quality), has paid off over

only Brazilian red and a bargain.

Brazil's a bit of a fate-starter in che
industry, but that can often mean they
stick close to the traditional formula, as
is the case here: pure merlot, no ques-
tion; T even got the acid heartburn flash
that is my personal benchmark for
Merlot unleavened by a dash of Cab.

Still, a great light fruity casy-sipping
nip fez the legion of Merlot fans who
have made it the only grape to increase
its market share significantly over the
last year.

“I've been drinking Brazilian wine”
may not mollify constables who want to
know why you" re doing the samba in
your jockeys in the street at 3 a.m., but
it will give them a laugh as they clap you
in irons.
