4 ~ Wednesday, December 20, 1995 — North Shore News Hearing set for boat shed RESIDENTS OF a Lonsdale Quay townhouse development will get a second chance to voice their opposition to a pro- posed fireboat shelter next to the SeaBus terminal. NORTH VANCOUVER CITY COUNCIL By Bob Mackin North Vancouver City Council voted fast month to endorse a rec- ommended sheltered berth for Fireboat No. 2 at the foot of Chesterfield Avenue. However, residents of Chesterfield Place fear their views of Burrard Inlet will be ruined and their property -values decreased. They say they have been left out of the process. “We question whether all appro- ‘priate sites have been located and properly assessed, in terms of suit- ability, noise, environmental aspects and public acceptance,” said Harold Holmes, HarbourView Park strata council chairman on Monday. _ He suggested council hasn't examined opportunities to situate the fireboat near the Seven Seas restaurant or the former Versatile Shipyards. Holmes said a public informa- tion meeting was held near the waterfront site in late August, but it was poorly attended and no civic planners were on hand to answer questions. Coun. Barbara Perrault ques- tioned why the aluminum fireboat has to be housed. She said the Canadian Coast Guard's aluminum vessels are unsheltezed. North Vancouver City Fire and Rescue Chief Tom Cumming said each of the municipalities involved agreed to shelter their fireboats, He said the recent ice storm was an example of why the boat should be protected from the clements. The decks, he said, were “solid ice.” If an emergency happened, the boat’s response would have been delayed while the crew spent extra time de-icing. Cumming also said security, proximity to parking and land-based fire facilities are reasons why the site. provided by BC Transit, is Coun. John Braithwaite moved for a public hearing before council makes a final decision to go ahead with the shelter at the location. The resolution was carried unanimously.
