a, Dear Editor: Regarding your Sept. 28 Inquiring Reporter article, it amazes me to see once again how il! informed most reporters and their selected interviewees are on the matter of gun control. itis the lack of interest shown by our government in appropriately dealing with this issue that should be our overriding concern, In the interest of providing some factual information instead of rely- ing on an ill-informed emotional response, let me give you some examples from Stats Can: @ 63.1% of homicides are commit- ted with some other weapon than a firearm; B 0.7% are committed with a legal- ly owned restricted weapon (proba- bly a handgun); and @ 13% are committed with an ille- gully owned firearm. the remainder with rifles, shotguns or unknown firearms. Should we spend hundreds of millions of dollars registering more guns, and not address the root caus- es of violence? Let’s check south of the border. Seattle, a similar sized city to Vancouver, but with “American attitudes” to gun control, has a homicide rate of 4.00 per 100,000 population. Vancouver, with presumably a similar number of guns per capita, and far more restrictive legislation. has a rate of 3.93 per 100,000. Washington, D.C., America’s t your gun into strale int capital, prohibits possession of any handgun. Hts murder rate is 18.0 per 100,000, The city of New York's murder rate: 25.7 per (00,000. Is that what you want in Canada? One more statistic from the “murderous United States": each year since 1972, our violent crime rate rises moze than 20% faster than it does south of the border. In 1991] it was 758 per 100.000 (theirs) versus 1,099 per 100,000 (ours). You should do some of your own reading on the matter of gun control. Examples are: the study made by Chief Inspector Colin Greenwood of the West Yorkshire Police at Cambridge University. studies by Professor Gary Mauser of Simon Fraser University. or the gun control legislation used by that well-remembered humanitarian. Herr Adolf Hitler in the early 1930s, The similarity in terminology used, and intent, will amaze you I'm sure. I'm enclosing a copy of the book Observations on a one-way street — The Canadian firearm control debate. \t should be com- pulsory reading by your reporters and editorial staff, before printing any more ill-informed articles on gun control. K. Dykstra Vancouver Nurses’ work lauded Dear Editor: I recently returned home from an 11-day stint at Lions Gate Hospital after major cancer surgery. 1am sure that 1 would have been in hospital much longer if it had not been for the excellent nursing care 1 received from the wonderful nurses of the sixth. I can only speak about this floor since my only previous hospital experience was in 1933 (tonsils at age 5) but 1 assume that all nurses are this dedicated and work just as hard. Nurses are often portrayed as coffee sippers, idly chatting with ti i Uy ARIBBON OF 18K GOLD ENHANCED BY DIAMONDS IN PLATINUM A SPECIAL CREATION $Y CAVELTI TONI CAVELT] & MAKER AND DESIGNER OF FINE JEWELRY 565 WEST GEORGIA VANCOUVER.
