Still many
limitations
to automatic
intervention

sophisticated software calculates

the distance to the edge of the
road; its radius of curvature, and

distance to obstructions ahead.

If a vehicle should veer off
course, VITA emits a warning
signal and automatically steers
back on course.

VITA can adapt the vehicle's
speed lo the road topography; it
brakes when approaching curves
for example. During overtaking,
VITA can warn of another vehicle
in the driver's blind spot.

Such automatic intervention still
has many technological and legal!
limitations, Faulty assessments
and reactions must be completely
eliminated before these systems
can work successfully.

Experts agree that a computer's
interpretation of the traffic picture
must at least match that of a
reasonably experienced driver.

‘Intelligent cruise control and
VITA are just two examples of
smart technologies being devel-
oped in Europe, North America
and Japan to improve traffic flow,
reduce accidents, and reduce
automotive pollutants.

Smart cars and smart highways
have two major advantages over
alternative transportation systems:
they use existing infrastructure,
thereby reducing startup costs,
and they maintain the often con-
flicting goals of personal mobility
and improved safety, traffic flow
and air quality.
