The images that fit with fatherhood have changed THEY SAY that the more things change, the more they stay the same, but that isn't always true. Take a look at the modern dad. Re's living a life that his own fa- ther and grandfather weren't free to live. While the men_ themselves haven't changed, our expectations of them are radically different, and they appreciate it. Until very recently, men were thought of as single-part players interested only in sports and cars. And while there are plenty of men who have a healthy interest in these, that is far from the sum total. of their parts. Research shows that men really resent this oversimplification and long to be seen as the complex beings they really are. Just how wrong have we been about men? Consider some of the following stereotypes, and how far " we’ve come in such a short time: © ) King of his castle It's not easy being king. While men seemed to be treated as kings, waited upon by wives and children, they also bore the tremendous burden of being respcnsibie for everyone’s lives. - The wives’ lives were only as good as their husbands could pro- vide for them. We have recognized that women gave: their lives in service to their husbands and children, but the ‘sacrifices men made have largely gone unnoticed. What was once seen as omnipo- tent, selfish: control over others’ lives should also be viewed as an awesome and often unwelcome re- sponsibility. Women ‘and men today are sharing the burden as they each: balance careers and childrearing. '- @ Leave it to father ‘who ‘Traditional parents played the good cop, bad cop routine and the father was invariably the bad cop. ‘Wait until ‘your ~ father gets home’ were: six. of . the scariest words in the world to a child. Once he meted out the dreaded punishment, it was the mother soothed, healed and understood — leaving the father to be feared, and often avoided. Today’s father wants — and . gets — a more total involvement with his children, which goes way beyond discipline and. distributing a weekly allowance. -@ Pipe and slippers Traditional Father’s Day gifts said a tot about how fathers were viewed. Pipes, slippers, sweaters and ties were given to the 30- year-old father and the 90-year- old grandfather alike. ® The many faces of the man Fashion and grooming trends imitate life, and the changes in . men’s, wardrobe choices are in- dicative of how the world has changed its view of men — and how men are looking at themselves. Not so long ago, two suits, five shirts and a dozen ties were the extent of a man’s wardrobe. To- day, men’s wardrobes are as varied and as broad as women’s. All sons and daughters who re- alize the pressure of raising a fam- ily and supporting it, raise your hands — and then go get your fa- thers something really unique for Father’s Day. They deserve it.
