Questions too much for youth to handle Dear Editor: As Opposition Critic for Educa- tion, I would like to comment on the proposed Youth Health Survey. The information disseminated by the government that ‘‘most B.C. school districts are par- ticipating in the survey’’ could be misconstrued. Many districts in the Lower Mainland are not allowing ihis survey to be con- ducted and Vernon is reconsid- ering the request. As well, many parents are not giving consent for their children to respond. While | fully appreciate the im- portance of gathering data which assists educators, public health of- ficials and parents in under- standing our youth, I believe the questions asked in the survey arc just too leading and suggestive. To even submit students as young as 12 years oid to 123 ques- tions regarding suicide, sex and drugs, among others, is to remove the seriousness of the way these issues should be addressed. For example, Question 181 (which I put to the minister in question period) asks: ‘‘During the past 12 snonths did you make a plan about how you would attempt suicide?’’ The choices to respond are just ‘‘yes’’ or ‘tno.’ Surely the entire matter must be revisited and a more responsible method found so that desirable and useful information can be ob- tained without those aspects of the present survey which are causing such concern. To conclude on a personal note, I have a 13-year-old son. My wife and I categorically refuse to allow him to participate in this survey and support the position of the North Vancouver School District not to take part in the exercise.
