INTERNATIONALLY AC- CLAIMED Australian architect - Glenn Murcutt will be the third speaker in the Alcan Lecture Series. Murcutt is known for his exquisitely beautiful houses, his mastery of detailing and his pcetic use of structure and ordinary ma- terials. Murcutt’s buildings are precise, hard and emphatically man-made objects. His poetry stems in part from his inventive response to light and climate — Murcutt’s buildings not only take advantage of the unique qualities of Australian light with special roofs and ceilings but also of the favorable climate with in- door/outdoor spaces. Murcutt says of his work: ‘‘My buildings are pieces of machinery set in the bush that respond to it Innovative Friday, November 22, 1991 ~ North Shore News - 15 GARDEN Australian architect speaks on spatial contexts and express it in the most direct way."” Murcutz uses a strict Modernist language but with references to the spatial and architectural histo- ry of Australia. His architecture is 4 marriage between a Miesian ra- tionalism and a romantic Australian primitivism -~ that is, a cross between the sophisticated glass house and the primitive hut. Murcutt’s work has been held out as an example of Realist Ar- chitecture the esthetic and philosophical approach to ar- chitecture proposed by American critic and architect Michael Benedikt who was the first speaker in the series. Murcutt’s projects include: New house at Bingie Bingie with its gull wing roof; Farm House at Mt. Ir- vine (1981); Museum and Tourist Canadian architect lecturing at Robson Square BRIAN MACKAY-LYONS of Halifax, Nova Scotia,is one of the finest young architects in Canada today. He is known for his sensi- tivity to the regionalist architec- ture of Atlantic Canada and his innovative designs for affordable infill housing. But more than be- ing just a regionalist, MacKay- Lyons possesses an inventive real- ist creativity belonging definitively within a modernist tradition. Indeed it could be argued that the architecture of MacKay-Lyons is one of the best Canadian examples of Critical Regionalism. Using a straightforward palate of ordinary materials, MacKay- Lyons creates poetically simple but extraordinary buildings. There is often a nautical quality to the detailing and materials as in his renovation of a 200-year-old - house in Upper Kingsburg, which has a lighthouse-like volume ex- tending through the house. MacKay-Lyons responds to the particularity of place and context yet very much like Australian ar- chitect Glenn Murcott (whe is also speaking in Vancouver soon), his buildings are identifiable as man-made objects in the land- scape, MacKay-Lyons’ projects in- clude: the Nielsen/White House (1988), which won a Canadian Architecture Award of Excellence; THE LION'S MARK.
