Harmony Arts Festival looking ahead to *92 WEST VANCOUVER’S first ma- jor cultural festival, Harmony Arts Festival, will be back next year. That’s the word from West Vancouver District’s supervisor of cultural services, Cathy Matheson. Matheson said the overwhelm- ing success of the week-long festi- val, which enlisted the support of 250 volunteers, will ensure Har- mony’s adoption as a West Van- couver tradition, “It went just fabulous. It really speaks of how successful festivals must begin at the grassroots level.’” Harmony Arts Festival began as an opportunity to tie the West Vancouver business and arts communities closer together, fes- tival manager Colleen Reed said earlier this year. ‘‘But what it has done is tie all factions of the community together.’’ said a delighted Matheson. . The event featured free outdoor concerts, a creative kid’s day in John Lawson Park, a walking art tour organized by Ferry Building curator Susan Aoki, in which West Yancouver merchants do- nated their storefronts fér artists’ displays; an art auction and tour of North Shore artists’ studio/ homes. Matheson said all the events were well-attended; the evening concerts at Ambleside and Dun- darave drew hundreds of people. The art auction raised $2800, all of which will go towards next year’s festival. The District of West Vancouver donated $13,000 to mount Har- mony. Matheson said $15,000 was raised through individual and corporate donations plus the equivalent of $10,000 in materials, food and supplies. Power Smart rebating popular B.C. HYDRO'S Power Smart campaign is reporting ‘‘major success'’ in getting businesses to switch to Power Smart lighting. Total lighting rebates were over $900,000 in June. Derek Henriques, acting vice- president of Power Smart, says “We're helping more and more customers to convert to energy- efficient lighting and equipment. “Our incentives have created a very significant new market for energy-efficient 34-watt fluores- cent tubes, electronic ballasts and compact fluorescent. “Before Power Smart there was a minimal demand for 34-watt tubes. The market was, and still is, dominated by inefficient 40- watt tubes. “But after more than two years of campaigning, we've got our commercial customers really turn- ed on to 34’s. They now take up 40% of the five million a year replacement market here in B.C.,"" said Henriques. “Its truly been a major success and shows that if you offer businesses the right incentives in the form of cost-effective energy use alternatives, they will jump on board with Power Smart.”’ He added that in June, 456 product application rebates were paid out for a total of $416,670 and 84 custom option rebates totalied $496,222. “*To date, the program has paid out over $7.2 million in rebates.”” Since Power Smart's official launch on March 15, 1989, it has achieved a load reduction of over 368 milion kilowatt hours, or enough electricty to serve 36,800 B.C. homes. That’s equal to the demands of a community nearly the size of Richmond. The goal, by the year 2010, is annual energy savings of 5,600 million kilowatt hours, enough electricity for 560,000 homes, or over 90% of the homes in the Greater Vancouver Regional District. ge parnceation me THE BEST RESULTS COME FROM TEAM WORK ANN and ROBERT VAN OEVEREN We know how to get your home [soto | FEEeeiwa Call 985-8231 or 925-9486 PARTCOPAC | ® : Mer aeie NEWS photo Cindy Goodman Hey, Kids!
