Dear Editor: Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Limited recently ran a one-page ad in the North Shore News defending its environmental re- cord. The ad referred to a meeting last fall with West Coast En- vironmental Law Association, so I want to clarify our dealings with the company, I act on behalf of Bowen Island Improvement Association, B.C. Council of the Confederation of Canadian Unions, B.C. Public In- tercst Research Group Society, B.C. Wildlife Federation, Cana- dian Association of Industrial Mechanical and Allied Workers, Consumers’ Association of Canada (B.C.), Environmental Watch, Greenpeace Canada, Ocean Resource Conservation Al- liance, Save Howe Sound Society, Sierra Club of Western Canada, United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union, and Western Canada Wilderness Committee. Sunday, August 11, 1991 - North Shore News - 7 MAILBOX Environmental group clarifies position These groups want the govern- ment to set stringent pollution standards for the Port Mellon pulp mill. This includes setting an urgent and realistic timetable for elimina- tion of the organochlorines from the mill. [It also includes setting standards based on what the mill has already promised it can achieve, rather than the looser standards contained in the mill's recently-issued permit. These are the two main reasons the groups have appealed the permit to the Director of Waste Management. The company’s ad claims that it has ‘‘built a mill that has an out- Standing environmental perfor- mance compared to any kraft pulp mill worldwide.”* We ask that it be required by law to operate according to those standards. Ann Hillyer, Staff Counsel West Coast Environmental Law Association Time for an alternative Dear Editor: 1 was deeply disturbed by Noel Wright's article referring to the New Democrats as ‘‘that socialist horde.”’ They are not socialists, believing in a market cconomy, and Noel Wright could do very well to read about socialism. If he can’t go in- to it thoroughly there are many encyclopedias that give a clear picture. Also, he would be wise to get some literature from the NDP office. After listening very carefully to the candidates at the Socred con- vention I can understand why they are voted in. For 40 years they have really said nothing much ex- cept that they must defeat these terrible socialists. Now is the time for both parties to get on with the business of running the province and stop bashing each other. It may be the time for an alter- native middle party. N.S. We are not given any details as to how the two teenagers got bitten by the police dog — whether they «were on private property, whether they had refused to leave when asked or were caught up in the crowd do not have the time to mull and therefore hurt inadvertent- the story over a bit, it creates ly. misunderstanding and increased The story quotes Mr. prejudice against our youth Cameron as saying ‘‘they and our police forces. (police) insisted on just corning in.’’ As Mr. Lawrence called the police for assistance, surely Mr. Cameron was commenting on how the police were han- dling the situation, and was not, as the quote implies, say- ing that they should not have been there at all? After reading the article one might conclude that young people have no sense of per- sonal responsibility and no respect for the law or its repre- sentatives. But after some thought one realizes that the facts have been distorted by poor reporting. For those who R.M.
