se, System monitors marine operations WHEN RALPH Richey talks about bilge water, you cart help getting excited. Michael Becker HIGH TECH He is enthusiastic about an en- vironmentally-friendly bilge pum- ping system he has developed. A landlocked landlubber can see the benefit. The president of North Van- couver-based Sea-Hornet Marine Industries (Canada) Ine. is riding the technological crest of a vessel monitoring and control systems wave. After five years of development, Sea-Hornet’s sophisticated V-Mac boat security and damage control system is on the market. The system monitors, logs and res- ponds to flooding, fire, gas leaks and break-ins. The system con- trols and monitors bilge pump operations and engine functions. And if someone falls overboard, an alarm is triggered. Because every incident is logg- ed, an absent boat owner can keep an electronic eye on the boat by way of computer. Said Richey, ‘'A vessel could be anywhere on the world. An owner might sit down at a computer at his desk, start a program and ask, ‘What's happened to my vessel? fm sitting in a condo in Hawaii. My boat is sitting in Steveston harbor and it’s a milion-doilar seiner and I'd like to know what's been going on with my boat.’ *” A computer dials up the monitoring system and foads in the log. it presents date, time and the nature of events, such as a pump switching on. Since V-Mac hit about six months ago, Richey said the pro- duct has been generating interest and sales worldwide. “We've had calls front all over the world, We have a big market in Seandinavia we didn’t even know about. The coast guard is asking us to supply some equip- ment for their ice-bound vessels. Custom manufacturers of vessels are coming over to us to see if they can have our keypad inserted in their custom consoles,”” he said. But back to the oily business of bilge water. Sea-Hornet reeends secured U.S. patent rights to a new pro- duct, an environmentally-friendly bilae pumping system. Explains Richey, ‘The prebiem in boats is that boats always leak. They have automatic bilge systems. The conventional bilge systeni is absolutely blind to what turned it on. tb really dousn’t even care, You could have radioactive plutonium in liguid form — on it goes and it just pumps it out. “te has other prodlems, toa. Taking Uhat into consideration our system is all solid state and it tall supersised.”” he said. Whet: it is triggered, down yous the aif and water, As soon as it detects the contaminants, it shuts off. Richey said the system will never Pump contaminated bilge overboard.
