34 - Friday, November 23, 1990 - North Shore News AUTOMOTIVES ICBC premiums to go up in 1991 WHEN ICBC makes its annual announcement about changes to Autopian, most B.C. motorists pay closest attention to what has hap- pened to premiums. The amount we pay for auto insurance is important, but so are the factors behind those premiums. This week and next, we wiil Jook at the details behind the 199) premiums. ICBC predicts it will need an additiona! 4.5 per cent in total premium dollars from B.C. motorists to pay for claims and improved Autoplan benefits in 1991. The amount collected for Third Party Legal Liability Coverage and No-Fault Accident Benefits will rise by four per cent while sharp increases in windshield, theft and vandalism ciaims will push up Comprehensive premiums collected 15 per cent. Underin- sured Motorist Protection (UMP) will rise by $3. The amounts paid by motorists will depend on their vehicle use category, which one of B.C.’s i4 Ken Hardie INSURANCE CORPORATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AUTOTOPIC territories they live in and their driving record. Premiums charged are adjusted in line with the claims experience in each territory and in each of the vehicle use categories. Historicaily, people regularly driving to and from work have had a worse claims experience than those who rate their vehicles for pleasure use only. Thus it costs more to insure a vehicle for commuting purposes. However, the worsening claims record for the pleasure usc-only class has served to narrow the gap between the two uses. Likewise, motorists in the traf- fic-congested Lower Mainland will continue to pay more for their auto insurance than those elsewhere in B.C. Rising claim tates in other areas, particularly Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows and southern Vancouver Island, will result in higher dollar increases but still lower premiums overall compared to Lower Mainland rates. . How do premiums look for North Shore motorists?
