Artist/sailor teaches painting

NORTH SHORE Continuing
Education (NSCE) instructor Colin
Hempsall, who is equal parts sail-
or, artist, writer, philosopher and
teacher, will begin teaching his
celestial navigation and watercolor
painting courses next week.

Hempsalf graduated from the
Vancouver School of Art (now
Emily Carr) and worked as a
commercial artist before the war.
After a stint in the RAF he went
on to a career in advertising and
marketing. He has been a North
Shore resident since 1948.

After retiring in 1973, Hempsall
bought the hull of a 41-foot ketch
and spent the next four years
completing Moon Island. In 1977
he sailed single-handed to the
South Seas and back — a journey
that took over a year and covered
14,000 miles.

With renewed faith in his
navigational abilities, he began to
teach the subject at North Shore
Continuing Education on his
return in 1978.

“I’m a lousy mathematician,”
he admits cheerfully. ‘‘I had to
learn celestial navigation graphi-
cally, and that’s the way I teach
it.

Hempsall has written a long
series of articles on his various
cruises for Pacific Yachting maga-
zine, illustrated by his own art-
work. An established artist, he has
held numerous exhibitions and his
lively, whimsical paintings have
graced the covers of several NSCE
brochures.

Over the past decade he. has
taught hundreds of North Shore
residents the techniques of painting
in water color.
