WELL-KNOWN RESIDENT PASSES AWAY Frank ONCE UPON a time, there was a handsome, happy and very kind gentleman who was generous beyond measure to those who needed his love, his assistance or his money. He dressed nattily, he served his community well, moved in all of the hospitality circles, had many, many friends, owned several fine establishments, as well as a beautiful yacht named EI Citta. And on the galley apron of the skipper of the ship was the follow- ing message: “*], Sovereign of the Succulent Steak, Overseer of the Oven, Viceroy of the Victuals, Emperor of the Embers, Lord High Host, and Boss of the Barbecue, do hereby declare that the name of the game is Happiness... so enjoy it! You'll never have a sooner chance!”” That’s exactly the kind of motto that the one and only Frank Baker had been promoting almost from the day he was born in Vancouver in 1922. Frank died of pancreatic cancer last Tuesday afternoon. His wife, Dorothy, and their two daughters were with him at his bedside in the Palliative Care Ward in St. Paul's Hospital. As a young man, he attended King Ed, along with people like CKNW’s Jack Cullen, the jazz world’s Bob Smith and the Sun’s Jack Wasserman. That’s where he began his musical career, playing trumpet. He met his lifelong friend, Jim Pattison, when they were both playing at the Foursquare Taber- nacle, and he and his trumpet toured with Amy Semple McPher- son and her Pentecostal troupe while she was travelling throughout the province many years ago. He began his business career as a caterer, mainly because he’d had so many dreadful meals during his musical gigs. So he opened his own Spring Gardens Catering operation on Granville, and shortly after joined Panes Bogue 2443 Marine Drive. He'd always been one of the ci- ty’s and the province's extraor- dinary tourist-boosters, whether in Vancouver or in Hawaii, where he was just as familiar a sight in his all-white outfit, straw boater and diamond-studded trumpet. It was during this time that he served as a Vancouver City alder- man from 1956 to 1962, and worked on every city promotion, whether on the Grey Cup commit- tee, the restaurant reform semi- nars, or the tourism board. This was the famous restaurant where the waitresses wore hoop- skirts and picture hats, and Dix- ieland musician Lance Harrison played nightly for almost 11 years, and everybody and their minister © dined on the Sunday night $3.98 buffet dinners. But after a series of financial downswings, he lost the Attic and his bankroll and returned to Van- couver to open the much smaller Frank Baker’s on Cambie. While he had great plans to buy the old Quarry House Restaurant in Queen Elizabeth Park, it all fell apart when he couldn’t get his fi- nancing together.
