32 - Sunday, September 20, 1987 - North Shore News Travel _ Cruises are a great way to vacation Juxuriously THE AVERAGE person rarely glimpses true luxury. Sure, every now and again we visit a restaurant where the raiters wear tuxedos and the napkins aren't made by Scott Paper. Few of us live in the world of housekeepers, downstairs maids and butlers, We read ‘Gone With. The Wind" so we know all about how things used to be and secretly yearn for a taste of that kind of living. The closest most of us will ever get to that taste is on a cruise ship. What a life! If | had to choose my best holiday ever it would be aboard a ship. Almost any ship, going anywhere, Years ago, cruising was the pastime of just the rich and famous. Then, it became more travel e wise by Barbara McCreadie Poa enrrrt Meraget Ci TRL be with ordinary pedigrees but a bit of money set aside. Today, almost everyone on a normal income and of any age can occasionally fit a cruise into their holiday budget. What blows my mind are some of the objections | hear from peo- ple reluctant to book their first cruise: “I'm afraid I'll get seasick.” Highly unlikely! Cruise ships are fitted with stabilizers that keep the motion to a gentle rock. They also prevent most of the side-to-side rocking that we find more difficult to deal with. Cruise routes are carefully plotted to avoid bad weather —- after all, what captain wants to see his precious passen- gers on their butts all over the dance floor? if all else fails, there are ex- cellent medications available. But, as one cruise doctor explained to me, more seasickness arises in the head and he had just as much luck handing out placebos! - “Td be bored. There isn’t much to do.” What nonsense! You'd have to be three people to take in all the activities on a ship. Aside from the | were 4X1 Syoseets AG? ports of call and the regular ship's features such as gambling and stage shows there are gyms, saunas, pools, classes, movies, card rooms, libraries, canteens and games. Hail else fails, the bars sell their product at duty-free prices. “Only ald peopie go on cruises."’ Here again nonsense. Not that it matters a damn about age, but our three daughters were aged 18, 15 and 14 when we spent 14 days cruising through the Panama Canal. They all agreed that it was the best family holiday they ever had. Moreover, the visit to Disneyland that we made at the end of the cruise was the biggest anti-climax imaginable — all they wanted to do was get back on the ship. 1 was discussing this column with our youngest, now 19, She wus reminiscing about the cruise and asked me if I remembered her dear friend Jane. My daughter and Jane spent a lot of time together, doing the rounds of the ship. They had a wonderful time. Jane was at least 75 years old! By the way, if anyone you know is thinking about a honeymoon — do thea a favor and suggest a cruise. | guarantee it as the best start for a long marriage. “T can't afford the right clothes."* The days of designer originals being the uniform for a cruise are over. And, in case you hadn't heard, neither ‘first class’’ or “steerage” exist either. informality is the keyword all day. To visit some ports you are advised to cover your arms and legs —- flesh bursting out of halter tops is frowned upon by the natives. Men may require a jacket and tie for dinner and the ladies will want a couple of nice dresses or suits, There’s usually one “dressy"’ evening where you'll get a chance to wear your Christmas dress and your spouse will need a suit. That shouldn't hold anyone back. “It costs too much."* Nat when you compare it to the cost of transportation, hotels and meals. The cruise price includes everything except alcohol, land tours and tips. Today, many cruise packages even include the cost of airfare. In addition, many have land packages so that you can spend extra days in the port of departure for a cutrate price. Abourd a cruise, there’s no cating in beaneries because you're running short of cash. Everything is paid for up front.
