WEST VANCOUVER bobsiedders Tim (front) and Chris Guss — shown here with the sew logo for the British Columbia Amateur Bobsleigh and Luge Association — are now in Calgary for an international bobsted competition running until Nov. 29. . Van sled team competes in Calgary TWO WEST Yancouver brothers will be the only bobsled team from British Columbia competing in the pre-Olympic Canadian Challenge in Calgary Nov. 17 to 29. Bobsled team Chris and Tim Gass, both 23, will be hurtling down 1,600 metres trying to beat bobsled competitors from the United States and other countries. Speeding dewn the track at speeds in excess of 100 kilometres an hour through gut-wrenching 270-degree turns, bobsiedding takes skill, explained Chris Guss. Starting from a dead stop, the two-man team pushes the 200- kilogram sled about 40 metres be- fore the driver hops in, followed 10 metres later by the brakeman. “Then it becomes strictly a technical skill of driving the sled,’’ he said. ‘You're trying to ease the sled into the corners and ease it out of the corners — the skill is to keep it down. You want straight lines...or you lose time.”’ Constantly training — ‘‘we do some land training, mostly weights Eliminate Hostility On Council Make A Change Vote for and running’? — the twin brothers started in the sport last year, and in January 1987 placed a respect- able {5th out of 24 teams in the “Canadian Nationals in Calgary. With good bobsleds costing $18,000 to $24,000 — as much asa good car — the West Vancouver Guss team is presently borrowing a sled for the competitions. “We're being sponsored by the Amateur Bobsleigh and Luge Association (with a sled),”’ said Tim Guss. ‘‘Eventually we’re go- ing to try and get a sled for B.C. There’s a good market for the sl- eds after the Olynmpics.”’ In the Calgary event, selected athletes from the 12 teams will be chosen fo train with the Canadian national tearn in Europe. “*T feel we're going to do really well because we've been training hard.” Should the two be seiected to train with the national team, they will be in good company — their brother, Lloyd Guss, 27, is one of the country’s top sledders.
