Marjorie Blackwood
joins Tennis B.C

TENNIS B.C. has hired former world-ranked player
Marjorie Blackwood to the new position of provincial
coach.

Blackwood was previously the head tennis profes-
sional at Richmond's Airport Inn Resort and the
Western Indoor Tennis Centre.

Tennis B.C.’s executive director Bob Moffatt said,
“‘We are delighted to have hired a person of Marjorie
Blackwood’s calibre and stature in the game. The
competition for the position was very close with a
number of excellent candidates involved which speaks
well for the current level of tennis coaching in the
province.”’

Blackwood was formerly ranked number 46 in the
world and she was the highest ranked Canadian
woman ever until Carling Bassett made her dramatic
rise in world standings.

Blackwood won the Canadian national singles
championships from 1977 to 1979 and remains one of
the top five players in the country and number one in
B.C

She has represented Canada several times on the
Federation Cup team and served as the captain of that
team.

She has also been responsible for national junior
teams and she currently coaches a number of B.C.’'s
top juniors such as Michelle Bogazard.

Don McCormick, Tennis B.C.’s director of high
performance, indicated that ‘‘Marjorie’s respon-
sibilities will include running Tennis B.C.’s junior
development programs and assisting Western Cana-
dian coach Robert Bettauer with Tennis Canada’s
training programs all at the Western Canadian Train-
ing Centre at UBC.
