Thanks to the Rotary Club, the 27-year-old North Vancouver ‘woman will be studying special education for handicapped children at the University of Lan- caster, * She leaves August 31 for one year of study in the United Kingdom. Feniai: said this wouldn't be possible had she not beer awarded a $15,000 international Rotary scholarship. “This scholarship is specifically for non-Rotarians,”’ said Feniak. “That is really special because it shows how service-oriented they are.” Feniak, who was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lions Gate, went before a panel of Rotarians from B.C., Washington, and Oregon last October for an inter- view. PROMOTE CANADA “They're looking for someone who can represent Rotary and to promote Canada and British Col- umbia overseas in 2 positive way,"" she said. Although there were 2,000 in- ternational Rotary grants made last year, only two people were chosen from 8B.C., including Feniah. She said this year five people . from this region are expected to be chosen for the scholarship. The five categories that grants are awarded are spccial education, By KIM PEMBERTON News Reporter undergraduate, graduate, voca- tional and journalism. Feniak said she first learned abcut the International Rotary Fellowship while a ferst-year teacher in Williams Lake. Her su- perior had been awarded the fellowship a few years earlier. MASTERS DEGREE After she taught at Williams Lake, Feniak began teaching special education and English as a second language at a Richmond junior high school before applying for the scholarship. At the University of Lancaster, Feniak will be studying for her masters degree under professor Sally Tomlinson. “I've been reading on the British special education system and her (Tomlinson’s) name comes up quite often. I asked to study under this particular professor because [| believe in her philosophy,’’ she said. “It’s quite an expensive educa- tion and | wouldn't have been able to afford it otherwisc.”’ Before leaving for her overseas study, Feniak has spoken at the Rotary Clubs of Lions Gate, the West Vancouver Lions Club, the annual Rotary convention § in Richmond and at a Rotary meeting in Bellingham, Washington. egis CATHERINE FENIAK helps Duncan Dee go over an English lesson.
