54 - Wednesday, June 1 . 1985 - North Shore News BIG BROTHERS Everybody needs Dad From Page 50 recognized the necessity of having a male role model,” said Slinn. John Boks, counsellor for the North Shore chapter of Big Brothers, confirmed Slinn’s statement. When a boy reaches seven, the eligibility age of becoming a little brother, most single parent mothers begin to real- ize he needs some male in- fluence in his life. Presently there are 60 ac- tive Big Brothers on the North Shore, but at least 20 kids are on a waiting list so more are needed. Boks says the median age for a big brother is 30 years old and the average stay is three years. But then there is Bill Barker, a septuagenarian who likes to take his little brothers water skiing and boating ‘‘because they keep him young.”” And another Big Brother of his little and has seen one brothers grow up become an airline pilot. Eric Stinn, who is younger than most big brothers, recently graduated from UBC in social work and this September is being recruited for the Vancouver Police force. Slinn says he’d be the first to admit that he didn't get into voluniecring just to volunteer. ‘‘It's good ex- perience for getting a job,” although that's secondary to helping kids like Jesse." The four to six hours a week that he spends with Jesse is doing ‘‘regular things’’. He says some big brothers like to be big spenders and make a pro- duction out of every outing. “They're professional guys and | don’t make that kind of money,"” he says. ‘So we do regular kinds of things. Often Jesse just likes to tag along and be with me and my friends. Maybe once FATHER’S DAY SPECIALS!! Big Brothers came to Vancouver in 1957, but since the early seventies it has been a thriving organization branching out all around the Lower Mainland. Its origin goes back to New York at the turn-of- the-century wen a group of philanthropists got together to help some poor, needy boys in trouble.
