Reductions in staffing
have also affected programs
because a music teacher may
be needed to double as an
English teacher, for exam-
ple,

“But the public has to be
aware we don’t neglect the
arts,’’ Rankin continues.
“We have a comprehensive,
balanced program.”’

Music programs are as
important as academics,
Rankin says, because they
address the other half of the
brain. ‘The right hemi-
sphere is not addressed
through basic academics. A
powerful symbol system is
developed through the arts.’’

Three district-wide music
events will include a second-
ary school Choir Festival
tonight, a District Ensemble
Evening March 25, and an
elementary school Choral
Festival March 26 and 27,

-The Choir Festival tonignt
will include five ‘secondary
schools from -the North
Shore and five from the
Lower Mainland, and a
short :workshop will be of-
fered by Bruce Pullen, con-
ductor of. the Vancouver
Bach Choir. The festival will
be held at Argyle Secondary
from 6 to 10 p.m., admis-
sion is free.

The District Ensemble will
be held at Handsworth Sec-
ondary at 7:30 p.m. and will
focus on all ages, featuring
ensemble groups from solos
to. trios, Rankin expiains.

The elementary Choral:

Festival will .be.. held at
Argyle Secondary, featuring
14 choirs who will sing alone
and together. One pres-
entation will combine seven
choirs. Concerts will be held
from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and 7:30
to 9 p.m. both days.
