AO - Sunday, November 11, 1984 - North Shore News cc itor ica News Viewpoint Taking on trust here may be a lesson for municipal can- didates — and voters — in President Reagan's landslide victory and Prime Minister Mulroney's similar feat two months earlier. In both cases the specific election issues proved, in the end, to be less important than the personalities of the two leaders. True, issues alone might have determined the technical winner. But the overwhelming SIZE of their majorities in each case reflected something more. A vast number of Americans obviously liked and_ trusted Reagan personally, despite reservations about some of his policies. In Canada, it was apparently the same with Mulroney. At council and school board level, issues vitally affecting the entire community---in the way interest rates and unemployment, for example, affect a nation---are fairly rare. Most local government issues are of direct importance only to relatively small activist groups. And the short three-week campaign period allows scant time for the electorate as a whole, even if interested, to reach fair and balanced judgments on often unfamiliar mi- nority concerns. When issues, real or imaginary, remain unclear and confusing as polling day ap- proaches, the safest course for voters may be to concentrate on personalities rather than **platforms’’; to look at the candidates’ re- cords; to ask, which can | TRUST most to do his or her best for us on all the issues? That's the way Brian's and Ronnie's huge majorities obviously figured things out. It's hard to imagine so many people wrong all at the same time.
