Dancing through life MARRIAGES made on stage are usually over once the curtain descends, but such is not the case with Charlene Brandolini and Jim Hibbard, both of whom are connected with Guys and -Dolls which opened Friday at the Arts Club Granville Island. Brandolini, who plays gambler Nathan Detroit’s long-suffering fiancee Adelaide, will be dancing to choreographer husband Hibbard's steps in the pro- duction. Both are well known around Vancouver, Bran- dolini in front of the curtain aS an actress, singer and dancer (she was most recent- ly seen on stage in I Do, 1 Do and Reflections on Crooked Walking) and Hib- bard behind the scenes. Apart from various local musicals, his credits include heading the James Hibbard Dancers for CBC shows like The Rene Simard Show, and teaching Frank Sinatra to do The Swim. ““You have to over- achieve here.’”’ The two met while work- ing on West Side Story ‘many years ago’ and now live thier own West Side Story tucked comfortably away in the wilds of West Vancouver with their two children. **‘We don’t go out to the theatre a lot’? they admit with an embarrassed giggle, family life 1s too important, but both have been actively involved in Vancouver theatre for many years, and are pleased about the im. provement that has been tak- ing place gradually. ‘‘! could see that it was going to grow’’ says Hibbard who from tos moved here Angeles FREE ARM with BUTTONHOLER *® straight © zig zag ® stretch @¢ overlock ® blind hems. too! includes accessornes and viny! case NOW ONLY 299°° Sale ends July 31 84 ef 72 NOME ALBEE’S SEWING CENTRE has Whale EET We By NANCY WEATHERLEY He admits that although there is ‘tremendous talent’ in Vancouver, the city isn’t always kind to its own per- formers. ‘‘You have to overachieve here, but go to Toronto and do a few jobs and everybody goes ‘ooh, wow’ while people go ‘yuk’ about local talent.”’ Speaking of local talent, Hibbard soon moves the conversation around to the fact that he is Dynamics Director at Confetti's discoteque where he arranges the ‘spontaneous’ dance routines of waiters that take place during a night at the club as the staff breaks into a three minute high energy routine. Along with dancers there are jugglers, mime acts, even visits from Miss Piggy. Which brings him around to the fact that there is little work for choreographers in Vancouver. ‘‘Music theatre iS a twice a year event, it’s almost impossible to do a full scale musical’’ because no one can afford them. A successful musical like Cabaret, recently produced by the Arts Club will proba- bly break even -- an unsuc- cesful musical doesn’t bear thinking about. And because of the financial fear facusr producers are inhibtted about experiments with shows, or staff, so they repeat audience favorites lke Guys and Dolls. There's also no variety on TV according to Hibbard who accuses CBC of ‘‘taking a giant step backward’’ with their programming Yes, there are a lot of A - - Model 654 Reg 389" Ploe youll recewe ahhimted FREE tessons with your new machine Emp T HE choreographers in Van- couver, but not many have much experience says Hib- bard who gives two secrets to choreographic success. One is to work towards mak- ing a dancer look and dance like themselves, not the choreographer. The other is that the ‘never done step’ no longer exists, its all been done before. Brandolini is less career- bound. She’s happy to sit home and knit and mother- -until another chance comes to play on stage. Guys and Dolls continues at the Arts Club Tuesday through Friday at 8:30p.m., Saturdays at 6:30 and 9:30p.m. Guy and doll WORK and pleasure are often mixed for husband and wife, choreographer Jim Hibbard and actress Charlene Brandolini.
