WHAT IF. mom iS WRONG?

QUESTION:

Is it possihle to KNOW
that your mother is wrong
and yet still feel guilty when
you do something -contrary
to the precepts she has
taught you? Dam it all, I am
almost 30 and I still feel
awful when I question in my
own mind something she has
stood for and taught us. It
feels to me as though there is
something. all wrong about
me even questioning her
theories. I know it is silly,
but i’s like I believed that
mother just can’t be wrong
and that if I think differently
to her, I must either be
wrong in my judgment, or, I
am doing a wrong thing in
thinking differently. How
can I learn to think and act
for myself without feeling
disloyal to her?

Start off by being grateful
to her for her love and
concern. Undoubtedly she

has done her very best, given’

the sort of awareness she has
had. Always she tried to
guide you well in your
growing years. So you don't
have to be disloyal to HER,
if, with the sort of awareness
YOU have, you are
privileged to see things more
clearly for yourself than she
has. You may be able to see,
now, that she made some
choices for you that you are
now able to replace with
choices of your own. You
are free to go against her
precepts/ without «going
against HER.

You will need to be ready
for her feeling that are
against HER, because she

may Teact in that manner at

first. When you think things‘

out, keep uppermost in your
mind that you are not un-
dercutting her, but, to the
best of your current ability,
you are making your own
new choices and doing your
maturing, which, after all, is
exactly what she has wanted
you to do, even if she has not
been appearing to have that
desire.

It is a mark of maturity for
a person to be willing and
able to examine thoughtfully
and courageously all the
teaching he has received at
this mothers knee (and
other joints) and select what
is mow appropriate and
valuable to him, and reject
that which doesn ot fit in to
this chosen way of life. That
need not be a rejection of his

Lelle said the inmate
dropped a ring into his cell
toilet and caught his hand

while trying to retrieve it.

A plumber was called to
remove the toilet from the
stall and jail personnel
worked unsuccessfully for
5“% hours trying to free the
inmate’s hand.

The man finally was taken
to St. Clare Hospital. Lelle
said it required three people
to transfer the inmate from
the jail to the hospital - one
