AS - Wednesday, December 2, 1981 - North Shore News 1981 le of trouble to become informed “on my. “Revenue Sites” before voting on this question, rather than follow Mr. Howard's, lead of com- menting without knowing the facts. ' If he‘had contacted me he would have learned I am . proposing that we ‘legalize: revenue suites in instances. where the owner is occupant in the home. Single family zoning would remain, but young people wanting to buy a home would be able to get a boost in income from a revenue suite which could make a home purchase viable. People faced with high interest rates and mortgage payments could get some relief with rental income, and seniors and others on ‘fixed incomes could stay in their homes, because there would be someone else in the house and they would have necessary additional income. It is probably true many existing suites would not meet health and safety regulations. That is precisely why they should be subject to: minimum health and safety standards to ensure our residents are not living in potentially dangerous ac- commodations. The knowledge that the suite was legal . would allow homeowners to invest in improvements without fear of the suite being found out and closed. Any additional City costs to inspect suites would be more than offset by in- creased licenced revenue. Obsolete laws are bad laws, and because they can’t be enforced, the public disregards them. Isn't it a sad situation when laws are only enforcd on complaint, and the occupants of suites live under the daily threat that they will be reported, and turned out into a zero vacancy rental market. Taxes would be basically no different from a house with a finished basement and a house with a basement suite. The city is already charging extra water and sewer rates and certainly the rental income now earned from ‘illegal suites” is required to be declared as Protection against vandals Dear Editor: After the conclusion of the Crime Prevention Series on Cable ‘West (Cable 10) there will be a "phone-in question and answer program on Thursday, December 17 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. This is sponsored by Cable West and the Police Liaison Committee of the City of North Vancouver. A panel will answer questions and will give advice on how to protect your home, or neigh- bourhood, or business premises from theft, van- dalism and arson. I also wish to express my appreciation to the voters who turned out in such numbers on election day. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my proposal with any citizén so they can be informed. My home phone number is 298- 7947 and my office number is 986-4321. A phone call to Mr. Howard will only serve - to confuse. I will be writing a more detailed outline of my “Revenue Suite” proposal for the North Shore News early in 1982. It is too broad a subject to attempt to deal with at this time. J.W. (Bill) Sorenson Alderman - City of North Vancouver Men, Women — Swim 7 Days sa We Week ~2 MO.
