OTTAWA (UPC) - The
Federal Metric Commission
announced “ Monday that
grocers will convert to
metric scales in January
under a renewed Liberal
program that a food industry
official said was opposed by
most consumers.

“It’s time to get on with
the job,” D.B. McArthur,
Chairman of the Metric
Commission told a news
conference in announcing
the new Liberal government
had revived _the metric
conversion program delayed
by the Conservatives.

McArthur said the
program will take effect in
January. He estimated that
within 18 months metric
scales would be in use in
food stores in 25 cities,
serving 80 per cent of all
Canadian consumers.
