In order to achieve oil self-suffici iciency

TORONTO (UPC) - Energy
Minister Ray Hnatyshyn says
Canadians must conserve
energy to accomplish oil
self-sufficiency and one
method to achieve this is to
raise domestic prices
without “widening the split
between the oil-rich West
and oil-less East.”

Hnatyshyn, speaking to
the Canadian Club Monday,
obliquely referred to
Alberta’s oil reserves and the
province’s apparent un-
willingness to share its
wealth.

worsening federal-provincial
relations, without widening
the split between the oil-rich
west and oil-less cast,” he
said,

“Pm sure the Premier of
Alberta (Peter Lougheed) is
well aware that Alberta ..,
can't escape the results of
Stagnation elsewhere; no
region can prosper long ia
vacuum.

Recently, Ontario Premier,
William Davis said that
Alberta’s policy is “very
serious and not at all helpful

for the economic unity and |

national opportunity.”

Hnatyshyn said he doesn't
accept that assessment,
adding that “these are very
serious questions to be
discussed in an open and
positive manner.”

The energy minister said
Canada’s goal is to be oil
self-sufficient by 1990. To do
this, the country must
