As normal service was
expected to resume at Iran’s
airports today, the question
over the return of the
country’s exiled religious
leader Ayatollah Khomaini
was still up in the air.

The airports had been
closed down to prevent his
return but after a return to
street fighting between
soldiers and demonstrators,
which claimed about 50 lives
in one incident alone, prime
minister Shahpour Bakhtiar
asked to meet the Ayatollah
in Paris to reach a com-
promise.

But the Ayatollah, who
has said he will throw out the
government and set up his
own Islamic republic when
he returns, refused to meet
with Bakhtiar unless he first
resigned, a condition the
prime minister found
unacceptable.
