NVD councillor says $5.9M facility not filling district’s recreation needs NORTH VANCOUVER District Coun. Janice Harris says the $5.9 million wave pool at the Karen Magnussen recre- ation centre is not providing Lynn Valley residents with the kind of recreation facility the area needs. “Y think a regular pool in the long-term would have been more beneficial to the community as a whole,”’ she said. Harris voiced her concerns about the wave pool during a re- cent council meeting concerning a half-size ice rink proposed for a site near Main Street and Moun- tain Highway. Harris said at the meeting that previous councils had. made ESS ee NE DN STN REA one Bc Sas oes DES UG By Anna Marie D’Angelo News Reporter mistakes concerning recreation facilities. She was not on council when the wave pool was approved. ‘Uf E had been around, | would have opted for a full-size swim- ming pool for Lynn Valley instead of a wave pool,” said Harris. She said the wave pool was ‘“errificatly small’? and had limited use for swimming pro- grams. Harris and her tivo children, aged seven and four, periodically use the Wave pool. “IVs a nightmare to supervise your children,”’ said Harris. She said it was difficult, for parents to look after more than one child at a time at the four- poo! facility. North Vancouver Recreation Commission director Gary Young agreed that going to the wave pool required more supervisory vigilance than going to a standard pool. But he said the wave pool was successful as far as the recreation commission’s user projections for the facility. He said young families use the pool the most, although it was also designed for teens and seniors. Young said the teen market changes depending on what. is a trendy activity. He noted that skating was a popular teen activity last year. Some seniors, he said, could use the wave pool with the machine turned off. Young added that some seniors and adults with special physicat needs, such as those recovering trom strokes, use the wave pool for recreational water activities. The recreation commission’s lifeguard staffing formula, he said, was one guard to 50 pool users, with a minimum of two on duty at one time. But because of the wave pool's popularity and its four separate pool areas, Young said up to six lifeguards can be cn duty at any See L.
