10 - Sunday, January 5, 1997 ~ North Shore News Dear Editor: Most v, the Lower Mainland suttered through a heavy snowfall that ieft the city in a shambles. The streets were not plowed leaving motorists fighting to get to work, stranded in their vehi- cles, and in many cases, in dents. The emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks and police were also slowed down in doing their jobs, such as emergencies, involving vehi- cle accidents, getting people to hospitals, and responding to fires. Not only did you and I have to fight our way on the roads, but so did they. This was sup- posed to be the worst snowfall in 75 years. The question is: Will we have another snowfall of this magnitude in another 75 years or will it happen again this winter or in’ the very near future? , Vv i come trom Ontario where snow storms ke this happen quite often. Cities like Toronto have snowplows and salt trucks out immediately clearing the roads so that motorists and emer- gency vehicles have a hospitals, fires, and accidents. We in Vancouver do not, it appears. However, as a motorist, TP pav extra at the pump in order that our roads can be kept in a safe and order- jy manner. We in the Lower Mainland pay more for gas than others outside of the Lower Mainland because cities like Vancouver have supposedly set aside this extra generated rev- enue to put towards our trans- portation system. However, it appears that this money in the form of taxes levied on fuel is not being used for the upkeep of our roads but is instead being used in orher Fall fiscal follies Dear Editor: A warm round of applause for the North Vancouver District councillors who deserve much credit for their recent display of fiscal responsibility. Indeed, they have proven themselves to be apt business people in RPE -EDAUR ATE Ra | zen in snow civ project, as a motorist and consuma,, am Very Upset at the deplorable way the city gos erments in the Lower Mainland misuse our taxes and thus put all motorists and the general public’s safety at risk when Mother Nature deals us 3 blow to our homes and cities. The cities that we live in are a living organism. The oval government is the brain, the veins and arteries are the roads, the hospitals and fire stations are the vital organs, and we are the cells that make up the body. The money that we carn, pay in municipal taxes plus taxes generated trom gasoline sales are the white blood cells thar are used to fight infection, and when the system is working property, the bady iy healthy When acold huts the body onan iapary occur, the bods is able te mend itself But when there are not enough white blood cells to fight che disease, then we have a major problem. There is a disease in the brain. This disease must be climinated or we could fice an even wore scenario in the very near future. If fas a motorist, have got to pay lngher taxes on fuel, then his money be used for the Perhaps vour city council hasn't got vour best interests heart like you thought? Next, the provincial government's reduction of money trans- ferred to the district along with the proposal te limit film production in the district will aid in decreasing total revenue. Such a large profit, so simply! (We will ignore the negative sign for the time being). Additionally, T especially thank those who voted “Yes” to approve the new $26 million loan, along with all those who abstained from voting, to allow for the passage of this excellent idea. You see, I had this problem of having just too much disposable income and now: [ no longer face the dilemma of what to do with it. Chris Z.
