y, October 23, 1996 — North Shore News t A ry An open letter to readers of the North Shore News: Our local publisher, Peter Speck, is a decent and forthright man, deserv- ing of our fairness in our appraisals of him. Often, we see the proofs of his work, usually when some of his peers have just seen fit to grant some award or other in recognition of his efforts as the North Shore News publisher. Mr. Speck must be sick and tired of being told how to run his business. OF course, as a publisher, the expressed opinions of his readers do matter to vy : how he decides to conduct the day-to- day affairs of his business? It would appear, based on the reading of some recent comments (and for the sole benefit of certain individuals who always seem to miss the point), that we should repeat Lesson No. | pertaining to the art of belonging to this society of ours. We live in a free country. -As a con- sequence of that, we are allowed the freedom to think, say and act almost anything we wish to think, say, or do ... within our accepted bounds'of com- mon decency, and an extremely broad If you don’t like the way Peter Speck runs bis newspaper ... fine! That’s allowed! You can order a stoppage of deliv- ery, or refitse to purchase the product. You can even give them a reason for your action if you wish, You don’t like the format? You take umbrage over the expressed opinions of Noel Wright, Doug Coilins — or any other of his colum- nists or writers? That, thanks be to God, is your prerogative in a land where the winds of freedom constantly disturb the cob- him and, to some degree, those same opinions must exert some influence on Bring hack vehicle tests Dear Editor: , In place of testing cars. for air pollution in my view it makes much more sense to have all ‘cars test- ed as we used to have, for ‘brakes, lights, wheel align- ment, etc. ‘This was done in a spe- cial building just off Georgia Street, and we were all willing to pay for it, because it was a very valuable government ser- vice. : : * In-view of brake fail- ures recently and the dev- astating results caused by them. let’s jet common -Sense prevail. He brushes us aside by. referring to cur concerns as “.,. imaginary rail disas- ters...” unfairly stacking them up in com- parison to “the ever-present danger on our roads and highways.” “Until we had a tragic series of trucking related disasters on the North Shore, these events were imaginary by definition since they had not happened yet. I hope Mitchell doesn’t want us to have a major: - y rail disaster before he will treat this potential as a very real possibility and a legitimate safety concern. Let’s deal with it before people dic interpretation of the rules laid down ’g webs of our sublime content. Peter Speck respects that right. Peter Speck knows that. And so do you! Don’ t tell him how to run his business. OK? J.D. You can’t design brakes that will perform if you ignore proper maintenance and disregard maximum load levels, They are already properly designed.
