This week PI! introduce some more new and interest- ing plants, many of them orig- inating in Asia. There are many varieties of Cornus or Dogwood trees in our area but none are ever- green. “Summer Passion” or Cornus omeiense is a hardy evergreen species from the botanically rich mountain range of Emei Shan in Central China. The plant will develop quickly into a smatl, round topped, eight-metre tree. The leaves remain glossy with a copper red flush throughout the summer. The five-cen- timetre yellow flowers are pro- lific and open in fate spring or early summer. The tree should be planted in full sun and watered well as the flowers are about to open. Extra water will increase the size of the flowers. There is also an evergreen witchhazel or Distylinan race- mosum available for late winter colour. This large shrub or small tee will reach six metres and form into a vase shape. Does best in full sun or light shade. Paper Bush or Edgeworthin chrysantha is not a well- known or common plant in most gardens bur nwo new introductions may increase its popularity. It belongs to the daphne family and is native to China. “Gold Rush” is one of the boldest specimens with its large, yellow and extremely fragrant flowers along with showy bud scars on the stems. This two-metre shrub will produce flowers on bare stems berween December and March depending on the weather. It performs best when grown in partial shade where it is protected from overhead frost and excess rain. “Ruby Flash” is a red cultivar with slightly smaller leaves. Loropetalam chincnse rubrian or “Pipa’s Red” is a burgundy red-leated shrub that produces a mass of hor pink flowers in the spring and occasionally a second flush in the summer. It prefers full sun and well drained soil with some winter shelter, | have found ming does well as a potted accent plant. ‘Tree lilies are relatives of the magnolia family and three new plants have been intro- duced. They are called “Prosperity” Michelia (mv- kelly-ah) chapensis, “Siniling” ML. maudiae and “Yellow” Af. wilsonii, AML three trees will grow from eight to 20 metres and are slow to bloom. Prosperity and Wilsonit both produce yellow flowers where- as Smiling is pure white and all are scented. Mant in full sun or light shade and well drained soil.
