Compiled by Anna Marie D'Angelo Advertorial Ted White, M.P. #302 1200 Lynn Valley Rd. North Vancouver . dune 14195 ; We are naw about 20 months into | the Liberal mandate and close to the end 4 of this session of Parliament so { decid- f .ed to ba quite partisan this week and list some of the broken promises arid davel- oping scandals of this Government. The 1993 Liberal Plan for Canada (Red Book) stated: ‘ “If Government is to play a positive ) role in society, as it must, honesty and ‘integrity in our political institutions must be restored.” PORK BARRELS & PATRONAGE Despite all the promises of an ethical § Government, the Liberals have made 4 several hundred patronage appoint- ments and contract awards to support: ers, The latest high profile rewards revealed by Reform in Partiament include the appointment of lawyers who ) are the President and Vice President of f the. Revenue Minister's Riding Association to prosecute drug charges in Victoria; the awarding of hundreds of | thousands of dollars in contracts without fender to supporters of the Heritage § Minister; the diversion of $26 million from upgrading of the Trans-Canada to a @ tourist road in the Riding of the Minister of Public Works; up to $27 million in Infrastructure and Western Economic Development funds to Lloyd Axworthy’s Riding including the propping up of the Winnipeg Jets; numerous appointments to the Immigration and Refugee Board, Parole Board and other sundry Government boards and agencies; and more than 80 travel junkets for Liberat | MPs to visit places such as Paris in the springtime and Australia in the winter. DEMOCRACY? The Prime Minister promised open and honest Government with more free votes. Instead of that we have had, VTE 2A2 Telephone: 666-0585 Fax: 666-0569 ‘MORE OF THE SAME - believe it or not, more closure and limit- ing of debate than occurred under the Mulroney Government! The Grits are worse, much worse, than the Tories ever were! They have restricted debate on important Bills dealing with employment . equity, MP pensions, gun control and the budget. They have rammed Bills through committee stage tate at night behind closed doors with viriually no witnesses, making up and changing the committee tules as they went along. They have introduced a Bill which will do away with the parliamentary scrutiny of large num- bers of regulations, reversing a standing principle of our democracy that has been in place since the 1600s. They have denied MPs permission to vote on certain Private Members’ Bills and Motions which they knew would be supported by the public and a majority of MPs. They have punished three back- benchers wha dared to vote against the Government in order to represent their constituents, They are Hippo-Grits, deep into the trough of perks and pensions with no regard for your opinion or the taxes they take off you. (In case you haven't noticed, | am a bit ticked off with their performance.) OVER THE TOP | have had the feeling during the past couple of weeks that we have finally passed through the peak of Liberal pop- ularity. The scandals are starting to sur- face, the lack of democracy is starting to show, the unreasonable agenda is start- ing to upset supporters, and it looks fike the economy is in a major downturn. In addition, Ontario just overwhelmingly voted in a Conservative Government tunning on a Reform platform. The Liberal tide has turned, it should be a downhill run from here.
